Prison visit brings joy as miniature pigs delight inmates’ families at Surrey jail

Two tiny pigs from Buckinghamshire’s award-winning Kew Little Pigs farm made an unusual appearance at a women’s prison, and were met with squeals of delight.

Miniature pigs Foxy and Cherry trotted into HMP Bronzefield on 20 August, where they were part of a family day for inmates and their loved ones.

The Surrey prison described the visit as a resounding success, saying: “What a fantastic day had by all. Everyone who came to experience Foxy and Cherry was overcome with joy. What can be a very difficult time for families were able to make some very cherished memories together. A faultless organisation, experience and a very enjoyable day.”

Kew Little Pigs, based in Amersham, is a multi-award-winning attraction ranked in the top ten percent of animal attractions worldwide on TripAdvisor. The farm has built its reputation on ethical standards of animal care and a commitment to giving back to the community.

As well as hosting thousands of visitors each year at the farm, Kew Little Pigs runs outreach initiatives such as its popular “Pigs in Schools” scheme, which has already given more than 100,000 children the chance to interact with animals in an educational setting.

Olivia Mikhail, owner of Kew Little Pigs, said: “We were so proud to bring Foxy and Cherry to HMP Bronzefield and to see the joy they brought to the families who took part. Our pigs have such a special way of breaking down barriers and lifting spirits, and it’s a privilege to be able to share that magic in settings where it can really make a difference.

“At Kew Little Pigs we are passionate about not only the highest welfare standards, but also about giving back to the community, whether that’s through schools, care homes, or family days like this.”

Millie - Head Farm Hand

“I joined the team in September of 2021 as a Farm Hand.  This was my first proper job and the experience was very insightful as working with animals there is never a dull moment. I have always loved animals and have had many different animals growing up such as guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs and horses so I knew the animal industry was a career I would like to be involved in. Since joining Kew Little Pigs Farm I have had the opportunity to care for the animals and share my knowledge with all the customers that have visited the farm. I was promoted to Head Farm Hand in January 2023.

I look forward to my journey here at Kew Little Pigs Farm and hope to see you on the farm soon!”
