A much-loved star of Kew Little Pigs has died following a sudden and heartbreaking deterioration in his health, leaving staff, visitors and supporters around the world in mourning.
Gizmo, instantly recognisable for his calm nature and endearing habit of sitting patiently and opening his mouth in hopeful anticipation of food, was put to sleep on veterinary advice after his condition rapidly worsened. The decision was described by the farm team as devastating, but made with his welfare at heart.
More than just a resident, Gizmo was a true ambassador for the farm. As an adoptable pig, he forged deep connections far beyond Buckinghamshire, with adopters in the UK and even abroad given the chance to meet him in person and receive regular updates on his progress throughout the year.
For many, Gizmo was not just a pig they followed online, but a friend they felt they knew.
Photos of Gizmo sitting contentedly, eyes bright and expectant at feeding time, became treasured memories for families who returned year after year hoping to see him again.
Gizmo’s sudden decline was deeply upsetting. Staff said he began shaking and showed signs of a severe loss of brain function, with little hope of recovery. Surrounded by the people who loved him, the decision was taken to let him go peacefully.
“These pigs aren’t just animals to us, they’re family,” said Olivia Mikhail, owner of Kew Little Pigs. “Gizmo brought so much joy to everyone who met him. He had the sweetest soul, and losing him has left a huge hole in our hearts. Knowing he lived a life filled with love, care and companionship is the only comfort we have right now.”
Tributes have poured in from across the world, with supporters describing Gizmo as “a little legend”, “the pig you always hoped to see” and “a reminder of how special farm animals can be when they’re truly loved”.
